Sunday, March 21st

Charlotte was violent and angry in her sleep last night.

A "probably" tire and a lot of prayer later, we arrived safely in Aix just in time for chuch. We caravanned with Teal's car. He was behind us in the toll line and got stuck because some guy had gotten out of his car and was arguing with the toll booth worker. Oh France, you are a constant source of intriging people.

Dom went literally from driving the van to preaching the sermon. He definitely got a gift. He reminds me of PT sometimes. Tomato is exaused. Straight to bed after church.

Saturday, March 20th

Charlotte was extremely snuggly and rather talkative in her sleep last night.

The Musee du Desert is incredible. It follows the history of Protestantism in France, starting with Luther and Calvin and through the persecution of the Hugonots. There are 2x3 inch Bibles that they would hide in their clothing. There's a tiny space cut out of the rock in a cupbord where priest could hide if the house was searched. Everything for the churches had to be hidden. Barrels transformed into pulpits, communion goblets that screwed apart and formed candelsticks. I am so privilidged to live now, where we can leave the doors to the curch open right in the center of town and sing praise songs.

Lunch was delicious. Sooooo much food. I'm going to explode. For less than 9 euros, it a 5 course meal: omlette, olives and sausage slices, bread and pate, salade, and then steak. I ordered my steak rare. And French rare is RARE. Everyone thought I was a bit nuts, but it was very good.

After lunch, Tomato went with Dom, Teal and David in the white van to see if some place could fix the flat or get us a new tire. But nothing is open Saturday afternoon in a small town in France. We did find a mechanic, but he said the tire would probably make it back to Aix. Probably. Good enough, right?

Both Megan and Nathalie make killer vin chaud. Castles are so cold! Amanda, Marianne and I played Apples to Apples with the little girls while the rest either watched the rugby match or played sardines in the castle.

Friday, March, 19th

The white van made it! Way to go Kerri! The van shakes so hard when it idles, you'd think the engin was going to fly right out of the hood. Thankfully Kelsey discovered that if she puts her foot on a certain spot in the front seat it mostly stops. That's not disconcerting in the least.

Castle, spires and all. This place is gorgous. Something like 15 rooms. Monsieur de Cassennove lets ICCP use this place for free. He has 2 little room for himself, but other than that, we have run of the entire place. It's not a retreat center, it's his familty home. There are generations of portraits on the wall in the main dining room. The stone fireplaces are 400 years old and some of the chairs in the sitting room are from the 1970's and evrything else inbetween. I feel as though I could spend a month just soaking up the history here. It even has a secret passageway between the top towers. The far tower has a library with everything you could imagine. All the classics, Bibles, books on the history of the church and a huge stack of French plays. Again, if I had a week just to sit and read.

Our room, The Laughing Tomatos (Charlotte, Amanda and I) looks out over the whole valley. Amanda has the "floor bed" and Charlotte and I are sharing the "jello bed".

I arrived with the first group and prepared dinner with Amanda, Megan and Nathalie. Not many people came in the first group, so it was very relaxing just cooking and exploring the castle. With the 2nd group, I think we have 43 people here. Plus Monsieur de Cassannove, of course. He is so funny. He lets several groups stay during the year and the group before us was English. They had left some kind of dessert in the freezer. He pulled it out and asked us to eat it. Then went off on a little rant on how horrible it was that the English always mixed their sweets and savories.

Thursday, March 18th

Amanda's birthday! Had lovely tea and cake at Charlotte's in the garden. Getting ready for the Cevenne's retreat.

Wenesday, March 17th

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! I'm really missing The Breakfast Club (+ Kyle). Enjoy the Irish boys, I'm with you in spirit!
Pushed through the huge crowd to the back of O'Shannon's but had missed the text from Isaac so when we finally made it, no one was there. So instead we sat in Parc Jordain and looked at the stars. Tried to watch Boondock chez moi but internet hicupped 30 minutes in. :(

Tuesday, March 16th

Got the grocery shopping done. I'm getting rather attached to that little store.

Monday, March 15th

Got the letter from OFII finally. I have to go to Marseille on April 28th to get a physical for my carte de sejour. Which will then be processed. Who knows, maybe by the time I get back to the states, I'll have all this paperwork complete. Good thing that when I'm back in Helena this summer, I'll have a slip of paper that says I can be in France.

Something about heaters dosen't like me. Maybe it's just dorm heaters. Hmm. Oh well, at least it eventually came back on.

Castle retreat is this weekend. Hooray!
Mid march already. I can't believe it.
Em's letter about her spring break was just amazing.
I love that girl. I can't wait to see what God has planned for her.

Mondays are my favorite days and honestly, it's because of Life Group at the Carroll's.

Doors from Salon

Sunday, March 14th

What an amazing service tonight! Leadship had us set up the pews in a U-shape and Bill lead worship with Hillary. What a gift. We had just enough "Bible Bubbles" (as became their name) for everyone there. Teal had the congregation get together in small groups and read the verse off the bubbles and pray with eachother. I am so blessed to be in this church, especially here. Week after week there is truth from the speakers and community from the people. This church is very much alive.

It was supposed to be the baptism service, held at a different location with a baptismal, but unfortunately the floor of that curch decided to, well, explode a bit. Praise God it didn't happen during the service. So there were no baptisms, but it sounds like the new date will be when Charlotte's best friend is here to see her get baptized. So cool.

Hung out with Alex (friend of Teal's from Cali spending a week in Aix), Manda, Charlotte, Michel (Swiss, from le fac de theo.) and Melissa. Had some great theological discussions. On the way back I tried explaining "that's what she said" to Michel. It's still a work in progress. Oh, American humor.

6 am and still awake. Wish I could figure out this random not sleeping thing.

What I learned:
God uses everything. Even silly girls with paper bubbles.
Internet is really fast at 6am. Vive le Skype!

Saturday, March 13th

Spent 6 hours making origami balloons with Charlotte!

Friday, March 12th

Woke up with the alarm at 9. Amanda got up and dressed before checking the message that Charlotte had cancled the work out. Went back to bed. Got up again, got the message that Lizzy had cancled the Chateau d'If trip. Went back to bed. Pretty great morning.

Went to pick up the letter but it was closed for lunch. French have 3 hour lunch breaks. Who knows what they do. So Amanda and I walked through Park Jourdain to Pizza Carpis and got tomato, cheese, corn and chicken sandwitches. Le Paysanne sandwitch.
Then we found THE BAKERY: Paul. Filled with delicious looking goodies. And Olive bread (Baline aux 2 Olives--black and green olives) Isn't that great mom? I'm eating olives! I must be growing up.

We had set the movie Red Eye to load so we could watch it when we got back. It wasn't quite done so Amanda read me her sister's fairy story she's been writing. Very dark and very epics. Kidnapped parents, evil warlock, mind powers, glowing owl, bear and heart, evil pixies, death, prophecy and secret organizations.

When it was movie time, we started it up and it failed! We were being so patient, and it just stopped. So, now Amanda has been helping me update for y'all. She's the reason all the dates are right and there is only half the amount of mistakes there could be. 3 minutes of video, one blog post, 3 minutes of video..............

Melissa and Katherine have an new beautiful apartment right in Centre Ville. As in next to Hotel de Ville. It's one of the cutest places I've seen here in Aix. Isaac made dinner for Geoff Geoff, Amanda, Charlotte, Melissa and I. That boy is amazing. Fun evening, just hanging out. Congrat Melissa and Katherine!

What I learned:
If you want to do anything in France, do it between 10 and 11 am or 2 and 4 pm on Tuesday or Thursday. That's the only guaranteed time it will be open.

Friday, March 12, 2010

Thursady, March 11th

No afternoon classes! Went back and watched the Count of Monte Cristo in preparation for tomorrow. Then met up with Amanda and Marianne for the wine pairing dinner. Mmmmm...
A French chef made all the food. Goat cheese salade, duck, ratitouille and then crepes. Hillary's ended up on the ceiling. Mad flipping skills.

Wednesday, March 10th

Class.

What I learned:
Difficult words for Asian speakers: chateau vs. cadeau
"b" sound vs "p" sound

Tuesday, March 9th

Hong Chen is.still on the moon. (French for being a total space cadette)
"Tu a parti sur la lune acen ton copain"
Got the mulled wine recipe from Gabriella.

Monday, March 8th

Made a variation of Amanda's Home Made Reeses Cup dessert for Life Group.
Dad might have a job in Ohio!

What I Learned:
French peanut butter is hard to find, expensive and really gross.
Sucre Poudre is not Powdered Sugar

Sunday (or Sandune if Amanda wasn't here correcting my typing), March 7th

Stayed for the member's church meeting at ICCP. Very interesting. They have to go thorugh a lot of stuff for the French governemet to be an organization. Not that that is at all surprising. :)

Saturday, March 6th

Best morning ever. Jason made me the most amazing video. Ever. He got video messages from all my theatre people on opening night before the show. And pictures of the set. (and Lydia and Lisa gave me advice on my accordion problem--having to do with a river) I was so sad about missing the show. As always, he was perfect. I don't know what I did to deserve him.
There are cherry blossoms out the window!

Day trip to Salon with Amanda and Lizzie. Started off with trying to go to the chateau, but it was about to close for lunch. So we went to a little restaurant and had delicious omlettes and dessert. They were playing a Michael Jackson music marathon on the TV, so that was entertaining. The French adore him. It's kind of weird. (On the way back to the car we found an advert for a Michael Jackson cover concert on the car window.)

Found a cool rock/moss/tree fountain.

The Chateau museum was great. It documented over 400 years of French military history. The costumer in me went a bit crazy. And who dosen't want to see Napoleon B.'s death bed?
They have an Egyptian section and the little enterance has a loose tile. Fits pretty well, huh?

We kept running into references to the Dragons. Turns out they were the elite French soldiers. And along the way, we re-wrote French history to fill in the gaps in our knoweldge. I like our version.. Hey, governments do it all the time!

Stopped by Amanda's little village on the way back. She lives with a very sweet kitty named Feline.

Quote of the Day:
Lizzie: "It's Algearian. That explains the little mexican jackets."

Friday, March 5th

Bleh. Stove is out on my floor. Down day all around. Stupid back.

Tuesday, March 4th

Saule's goodbye party :(
Had fun though. Watched Sister Act II. What would we do without Whoopi Goldberg. Finally got Isaac to join us. After 5 phonecalls. And I read Oh The Places You'll Go to them all like a kindergarden teacher. Amanda was the only one who had heard any Dr, Suess! How could that be? The world is a strange place.

Sunday, February 28th

Mexican food lunch with Amanda and Charlotte! Macarroni pasta, salsa, knacks, raped cheese, corn and sour cream all together in a pan with garlic and chilli powder. Turned out amazing! Maybe it's not really Mexican, but it was good. With baguette. Of course.

Went to the Bulldog and said goodbye to Charlie. :( Bon voyage!

Amanda and I rocked our first day of ushering at church, btw.

Saturday, February 27th

Slept in. As one should on a Saturday.
Went to lunch at the "California" restaurant. Earth friendly, fresh food.
Found a really sweet thrift shop.
There was a stamp festival at l'Hotel de Ville. So, we though, why not? It was actually pretty cool. No hot fench boys for Charlotte, mostly old men. The room it was in had some beautiful artwork.
Shoe shopping: found grey and black flats yay! My other ones, that Jason bought me and eveyone loved, finally died yesterday.
Went to the Aix tourist shop and found postcards. Then the rain started pouring down.
Went back to my room for warm pain au chocolat and hot chocolate.

Friday, February 26th

Amanda and I traversed Aix trying to get to the bus station. Finally made it and met Saule, Lizzy and Charlie. Headed off to Les Baux in Lizzy's car with a bag full of Clementines. (and Baby Tiger!)

Drove as fast as Lizzy's little car could go. Went through St. Cannet, Pelissanne (Amanda's little town) and Salon (which has a sweet airplane statue) And by a zoo, a playplace with giant dinos and a sweet Chateau (de la Barben)

Les Baux is beautiful.. The city section reminds me of Ez with the winding little streets. We got into the citadel section and Charlie started "flying" across it, flapping his arms like a bird. And we all had little kid juice boxes. Yep, that's the family for ya.

Had lunch is a little lookout cave on the side wall. About a 300 foot drop out the huge window. We cut the Camembert cheese with floss (Charlie is always so prepared) And we all shared the final communal juice box. Hung out off the wall to get a sweet pic. So worth the near death experience. 12th century chapel was amazing. Still so much to see. Defiantely worth the 6 euro. Especially since we got to put Charlie in the stocks.

Climbed to the top of "The Great Wall of France" (yes we are that cool) and looked out over all of Provence. The stairs up were massive. Felt like they were for giants. Half way up there is a veiw of a valley that matches the desciption of Dante's hell. When we reached the top it was like being at the top of Minas Tirith. So I pulled out my iPod and played the LOTR theme at the very top. So epic.

All of our fingers are dyed orange/yellow from the clementines. So worth the huge mess.

Made it home and Amanda and I took an awesome 2 hour nap

7:30 was Hanna's birthday. Tons of people in a little appartment.
Party with a bunch of international students = awesome food.
spicy seaweed, smoked salmon sushi, Gabriella's chicken wings, amazing coffee flavored cake, lots of wine

I met Sebastain who has a friend living in Aix who is from Helena! Her name's Anna. Need to find her on facebook.
Also met: Sven-from amsterdam
Hailey from Luxemborge
Alexandra from Nice
Floor party with Polarbear paws with Charlotte and Amanda. Really delicious.
Amanda spent the night again. Woot woot!

Thursday, February 25th

Presentation went fine. WIth the help of Amanda, our French powers combined, we restored order to the universe...um, power to my room. Kind of an embarassing conversation with the housing lady trying to tell me to find the fuse box, but all worked out in the end.
Bulldog burgers! Actually good, not like regular French burgers. "Probably the best burgers in Aix!" is there catch phrase. And it's probably true.
Made some sweet designs with the Heinz ketchup, mustard and mayo packets with Vincent.
Helene's last night :( Have an awesome time in South Africa!
Amanda spent the night. Woot!

What I learned:
Laura loves Churchill
Listening to the French try and say "hamburger" is really funny. Seriously, the scene out of the new Pink Panther wasn't much of an exaggeration.

Wednesday, February 24th

Doing a group project for French Culture class with Amanda and Hannah. Oh, Nathan! Our professor looks like the Magician from Citadels. He always gestures with one hand and he has this thing with his eye. He squints it when he talks.
And the power went out trying to finish the Moliere essay. So frustrating! Charlie let me use his compy to finish. Cheers Charlie!

Tuesday, February 23rd

Community Group with Domino's Pizza! Pretty much the same as the US, but the cheese is better. It was moved to today because last week the Carroll's were in Paris looking for apartments.
Celebrated Rachel's birthday.

Sunday, February 21st

Amanda spent less than 6 hours at her own house this last week. Good for us!
Cereal party after church at Minnisota's. It's an amazing apartment. They share it with 6 Sweedish students. A bit crazy, but cool.
On the way back home, Charlotte had a fast food craving. So we went to Quick, a French McDonalds. Smell of grease and everything. Amanda and I refrained from defileing ourselves. Saule and Charlotte went for the burgers. We all did try a fry with curry sauce (like from a little BBQ package) just for the novilty. Thus far, I have not eaten any fast food. And plan to hold out as long as possible.

What I Learned
Fast food is fast food. Dosen't matter where you are.

Saturday, February 20th

Charlotte's family was getting back that night so it was morning power cleaning. Not that bad actually. Although there were 9 empty bottles of wine on the counter and 3 empty jars of Nutella. But let's be fair, it was at least 7 people for a week. Not that bad. :)
Also, Chilli Chilli Rentre! Church chilli cookoff at the Andersons. Beautiful house up by St. Victoire. Amanda developed an itintimate relationship with Charlotte's jeans and she hemmed them while Charlotte was wearing them.
Bonfire at the Anderson's too! Lots of ash though. :(
It was set up like American Idol. Charlotte was Simon, simply because she was English. White, Australian Isaac was Randy and April was Paula. They did a great job. Here is the list of Chillis.

10 chillies
group 1: strangest
pumpkin and beanless with beer
Group 2: French
white bean and a garlic one
Group 3: traditional
pineaplle, naked, kidney beans, sweet corn
Group 4: Spicy:
i didn't try it
Kelsey-wore goggles and Adam and Tasha-homemade spicy sause

Then we all watched Groundhogs day. Such a good show. It had been so long since I'd seen it. And explaining the concept to non-Americans is hillarious. That has got to be one of the most rediculous holidays ever invented.
Met a yoga instructor, Julie Frazier.

Ended the night at the Bulldog: dessert and card games with the family and Kerri.
Then is was the sad sad goodbye. The end of the family week. The breaking of the Fellowship. ( I miss you Em! Oh, and I told them all about the "duck" and "cheese" word replacement. Long live The Lord of the Cheese!)
And apparently I missed out on Charlie's pee dance in the middle of the night.

Friday, February 19th

Woke up at 9am to watch Return of the King. Yes, we are that obsessed. Amanda made amazing blueberry muffins and orange butter. Sooo good.
Made some amazing twice-baked potatoes. Or as Charlotte said, "half-baked". I think that's something else. Charlotte committed a French crime by going out grocery shopping in sweatpants. I know. Scandelous.
Girls decided it was Karaoke night. On the way we took a wrong turn and ended up having to climb over a gate. Charlotte and Amanda were in dresses, Melissa and I in high heels. It was great. I got to know Charlotte REALLY well ;) (see photo on facebook)
We went to Karaoke Box near Cuques. It's mostly a bunch of university age Chinese and Koreans singing song with videos of people running through fields. And ALL of them sounded like "My Heart Will Go On". Not kidding. WE even tried it out.
Helene and I sat back and watched evryone sing. Saule gets really into Karaoke. Especially after a few shots. It was nice just getting to chat with Helene and get to know her a bit more. She is so sweet.
More hot chocolate and 5 minute microwave chocolate cake.

What I learned:
Asians love Karaoke
Don't let Charlotte lead
Everyone loves Spice Girls

Thursday, February 18th

Shopping day! Convinced Charlotte to buy the huge flare jeans. Kin triumphs over French fashion! Found some skinny jeans for me too. Miss Look = Amazing and Inexpensive.

Got back and found that Charlie had ditched us for 4 other women. Rather upsetting. Half way through dinner, we all paused and found that something was a bit odd. Then realized that it was quiet. Because Charlie wasn't there. Not that it was a bad thing, just realized how he always has some random topic of conversation to bring up. Usually having nothing to do with the conversation currently happening around him.

We made orange Madelines which turned out amazing.
It was hot chocolate night for us girls in the bed. Proper hot chocolate, not the mix stuff. And the "I Like Toast" video on youtube. (Compliments of Jason)

Then it was time to watch Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Couldn't quite make it to Return of the King. Really missing my LOTR girls back home. Love you all! Frodo lives!

Quotes from the day:
"Bonjour Mais Oui Baguette Bon soir"
"Baguette! (followed by French laugh)"

Wednesday, February 17th

Belated Chinese New Year! Still at Charlotte's. My room in Cuque is probably starting to miss me. Attempted to make home-made fortune cookies. The first batch turned out to be Unfortunate cookies since we forgot about them while eating dinner. Probably because we were trying to get the camera set up to take a picture of us all. We were eventually victorious. Except I don't think "eventually" and "victorious" should go in the same sentance.

The menu: Charlotte's 2 types of curry (hooray for sauce from Casino!)
Egg fried rice Cantonees style with lardons
Boiled curry rice with coconut milk
And my "asian" potatoes. Asian for the sole reason that they had coconut milk in them. Oh and kind of forgot about the whole celcius/F difference on the oven. So, I cooked them kind of high. Really high. But hey, they tasted good.

Lizzy joined us for the evening and we eventually got the fortune cookies to work out. It was a lot of fun writing up the fortunes for everyone. It turned out to basically be a montage of all the inside jokes we'd formed throught the week.

The movie of the night was Yes Man.

What I learned:
Celcius/F conversion isn't that important
Aparently we all "fall asleep REAL nice" according to Charlie
"No man! No man!"
Fortune Cookies rock!

Tuesday, February 16th

Stayed up rather late again last night. Just three of us in the bed tonight. Got back to my room around 1:30pm. Tried to use my key to open room 205. FYI, I live in 207. Perhaps I'm not getting enough sleep.
Anyway, tonight is pancake party back a Charlotte's complete with masks for Mardi Gras. Amanda and I are going to make out first attempt at potato pancakes. So this morning/mostly afternoon, Saoule and I clenaed up the house and I'll be back there at 6:00 to start crepes/flap
jacks/potato pancakes.

It's been overcast and warm today. So nice.

What I learned:
Don't try and open strangers' doors with your room key
There's a huge difference between 3 and 4 people when it comes to sleeping in a bed

-----------------------------------------
Tuesday Night
Mardi Gras party!
Pancakes and Masks (face paint)!
lithuanian, hootinanny, and crepes
people: minnisota, isaac, melissa, mike, emma, family, helene, ando,
movie: hot fuzz
charlotte did isaac's swirly makeup
dancing
80's workout Rocky from Saule
learned some west coast from Mike
Charlie ended up with tears, french mustache, and a harliquinn diamond

Monday, February 15th

We all finally fell asleep around 7am. Charlotte, Amanda, Saule and I all piled into one bed. Got up around noon, cleaned up, came back to Cuque. Did some hand washing. Went back to Charlottes for dinner and movie. Megavideo takes forever to load, so we alternated between whatever was loaded on The Man Who Knew Too Little and Simpsons episodes.

What I learned:
Simpsons in French sounds more like German
France's version of the hot dog is called a Knack. And you do pronounce the K.

Sunday, February 14th

Best Anti-Valentines Day ever. I started out in a funk this morning. The party was cancelled, my finacee was 2,000 miled away.

Went to church and found out the party just got moved to a different location. After church we got Chawarma. The plan was take it to Isaacs house and eat before moving the party chez Charlotte. Isaac's was stuck babysitting his younger sisters. The oldest is hillarious, by the way.

We ate our dinner, then played the human knot game. The first few rounds were incredibly easy. The last round took us about 40 minutes to undo. I think I spent most of the time on the floor. We all agreed the bast word to describe it was "epic". Michelle from la fac de theologie joined us. It was the first time he'd met most the people. And there's not a whole lot of personal space in the knot games.
We decided to stay at Isaacs and watcha movie. After much debate, we ended up with Push. Definately worth watching at least once. Just ignore that it's Dakota Fanning.

Amanda lives out of town and Charlie and Saoule are staying with Charlotte for the week, so around 2am we all headed back. I was going to return to Cuque, but ended up going to Charlotte's. Better choice by far. Watched a movie, then stayed up talking.

What I learned:
No matter how hard you try, the owner will still make fun of the was you say Chawarma.
Frace internet does not support: Pandora, Fox.com, or Netflix

Friday, February 12th and Saturday, February 13th

No use separating the days. All I've done is sleep and watch movies. It's been too cold to go out and do anything. And my friends who live here in the dorm are all on trips because there are no classes this week. Not sure what I'll be up to. I think Amanda and I might go explore Aix if it warms up a bit.
I left the room to make food in the kitchen, but that's as far as I have gotten. I've got the crepe flip down pretty well, if I do say so myself. :)

What I learned:
Sink is big enought to wash a sweater, but not quite jeans

Thursday, Fubruary 11th

On the third trip to the International Office, Amira's assistant was there. None of them know why I need to get this form filled out or where to find the information to complete it. And Amira left for something. So after 3 days of visiting offices, they had me sign the bottom of the blank page and leave it on Amira's desk.

C'est la vie, c'est les francais.

I think I'm going to be a much more chill person after a semester here. (Jason, France says you're welcome.)

Classes are over and it's officially vacation!

What I've learned:
There is no such thing as "normal operating hours" in France. If you think you may ever need to go to an office again, write down where they are open. That will give you a 75% chance of finding them.

Wednesday, February 10th

Right paper, possibly right photo. I'm praying my cell phone dosen't ring.
Still trying to get that form filled out. So glad there is a wine tasting tonight.
--
Wine tasting was so much fun. Learned hour to smell, taste and evaluate wine. Very fun and very relaxed. Hillary, our wine expert, is such a lovely, bubbly person.

One wine was very smokey tasting and all Isaac and I could think of was how good it would taste with a medium-rare steak from the grill.

What I learned:
-French wines are labled by region, not by the type of grape used.
-Most are a combination of the grapes from the region. It's rare to find a wine that isn't a blend.
-The top 3 roses in the world are made in/around Aix.
-Alcohol content is lower in most French wines than in American wines
-Rose is made from red grapes, but the skins were only left in for a few days to give it the pink color
-Blush is leftover white wine that have had red skins soaked in it (aka not good)
-Box wine in France is as good as the bottled wine
-wine + pears = mmmmm
-restaurants in France usually have different sized bottles of wine you can order

What we tasted:
Domaine du Paternel (Cassis)
--white wine
--not to dry, not too sweet
Chateau du Seuil (Coteaux d'Aix-Pce)
--rose
--very fresh tasting, common summer drink
Domaine Coillot (Marsannay-Bourgogne)
--red, smokey wine
--steak cravings
Domaine de Cassan (Gigondas-Rhone)
--dark red wine
--really really good with dark chocolate
Domaine des Bernardins (Beaumes de Venise-Phone)
--possible the sweetest wine I've ever tasted
--can't get it in the US
--most vineyards are pre-sold out of it for the next 3 years

Tuesday, February 9th

Right paper, wrong photo. And a new form! Yipee! (a.k.a. shoot me now)

Made it to Monoprix for notebooks. Monoprix is basically a more expensive Target. It's the only store I've found that is all-encompassing. There isn't really anything else like Target or Shopko or Fred Meyers here. And I bought a mug so I can make tea!

Monday, February 8th

Wrong paper, wrong photo.

Made it to Ed this time. Picked up tomatoes and lettuce for Community Group hamburger night. Group was amazing, of course. Still making our way through Luke. No group next week, Bill and his family are going to Paris to look for appartments/houses. They are most likey moving there this summer. So we are reading Ephesians on out own this week.
A new girl, Melissa, came this week and we chatted quite a bit. She asked if I was Bill's daughter and was surprised when I said I'd only been in Aix for a few weeks. She said I looked so comfortable here. It made me appreicate even more ( I didn't think it was possible) how wonderful ICCP is, and how welcoming Bill and his famiy are. God has taken such good care of me. And this church is difinately on the right track.

Sunday, February 7th

I was on my way to Ed to do some grocery shopping when I came across a large group of people lead by Minnisota and Charlie. They had just come from the French morning service and were on their way to La Fac de Theologie for an English Lunch. An American from the church invited all the English speakers to la fac for lunch. Got to spend tome before lunch getting to know the Minnisota girls a bit more. Michel, who studies at la fac gave us a tour of the place. It's about 5
minutes from my dorm. I pass it on my way to school.

After a delicous lunch of spaghetti, we all walked down to an incredibly beautiful park. It's a ways down, but its set up around a river. You come off the highway and drop down into this beautiful forest. I think it will be a nice retreat when I start to miss home.
There are lots of pics on Facebook. It's been suck a beautiful day. Aix finally proved it was part of the south of France. Keep it up!

Didn't make it back in time forn chuch. I didn't want to start back before everyone else because of my amazing talent for getting lost. I waited on a bench on the Co-Bo for church to get out and got hit on my a Frenchman. He came up and asked if I was Russian. Pretty good opening line. We chatted for a while and I turned down the invitation to go have coffe. And the one to go have tea. Or wine. Or beer. (If he thought I was Russian, you think he would have offered Vodka.)
It was nice to know I can carry on conversation outside of the dorms and the grocery store.

Met everyone for Chwarma after church. Someone told the guy that "sauce blanche" was "white sauce" in English and it made his day. He thought it was hillarious.

Updates from the Breakfast Club make me so happy! (It's two Rs. H-O-R-R-I-...yeah.....BURN!) Love you Lisa and Lydia!
It's absolutely pouring rain outside. I need to go to the store to get my costume for Charlotte's party tonight, but I don't want to get completely soaked on the way.
I can't post what my costume is until tomorrow though, because at the moment, only Charlotte knows.
Oh, the sun just came out a bit. Come on sun! Hopeefully it will stay out for the day. Charlotte is so excited about tonight, she can barely contain herself.
Ah the sound of accordian in the morning. That song, that same song..............one more time! Pictures on their way.

Thursday, February 4th

Gota message that it is Siblings Week on facebook. Relized I ony have 3 pics of Lenny and me in my facbook albums. On is the two of us on opposite sides of the kitchen, in one I am dead and he is Jesus, and the thrid is the two of us at Universal Studios on Lenny's high school graduation trip. Totally went with the third. Snap, I used to have muscels.
Movie party at Karri's! Walked in the door and was greeted my an aorabl kitteh! She had a projector set up and kitty watched the movie intently for a while. Isaac and I tried very hard to get everyone to watch Zoolander, but failed. 500 Days of Summer was good, but I'm really not a huge fan of watching people be adorable and in love right now. Sigh.

Wedneyday, February 3rd

Skype is so infuriating. And by skype I mean this internet. There's a double charge on my accout as well. This is going to be fun to work out in French.
And I spent 3 hours trying to pay the housing deposit. Woman who works the from gate/housing office is extremely bi-polar and frightening.

Charlotte sent me this. It's amazing. Please enjoy:

Hi All

Thought you had better be aware!

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940, when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Ruddy Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Ruddy Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

The Scots raised their threat level from "P***** Off" to "Let's get the rotten scunners" They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line in the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror Alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a Heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels Remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher Levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile, and as usual, are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their Allies, just in case.

And in the Southern hemisphere...

New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA!". Due to continuing defence cutbacks (the air force being a squadron of spotty Teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which Is "Jeez, I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I Think we'll need to cancel the Barbie this weekend" and "The Barbie is Cancelled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final Escalation level.

Facebook Status "Kimberly Kristen Calkins lives in between a girl who does nothing but sing along to Japaneses pop at all hours of the day and night and a girl who is learning how to play the accordion. Does this sound like a sitcom setup to anyone else?"

Beav's look alike pics are making me so happy!. Sealab quotes and his pictures are rediculouly accurate.

Class schedule has prevented me from going shopping at le solds with Charlotte. In France, the month of January/first week of February is Sale month. All the store so their massive sales. I really need a pair of boots (especially with the predicted rain) and would rather pay 20euro than 44euro for them. And, knowing me, I wouldn't pay 44euro for them. I'd just slosh around in my little flats.

Prediction:
Neither pair of flats will make it out of France alive.

Monday, February 1st

Made it within one block of the Cathedral, then took a wrong turn. Eventually did make it there, and Charlie was looking all over for me. He's a good guy. Buy the time we made it to Life Group, Charlie had gotten bumped by a car on his bike and I had lost a glove. Very adventurous.

Made to Chinois Life Group. Such amazing home-made Chinese food. I don't know how Bill does it. Bill and his wife are such amazing people. Chrlie is staying with them this week until they have other guests coming. We are making our way thorugh the book of Luke. I think Monday night is my favorite night of the week. Next week we are having something completely American, it's almost funny: Hamburgers. We are all bringing pieces: lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, potato salad, etc. It's going to be amazing.

It's look-alike week on facebook, and the only one I had found was Bette Davis, which wasn't perfect. I was sitting and talking to Emma when a noticed a group around Bill all staring at me. Apparently I look like Emily from Friends. I've never seen Friends, but the picture does have and uncanny resemblance.

Sunday, January 31st

Great service tonight. Music included the runner's song from the Passion Mime and He Reigns by newsboys. Lots of activities coming up with the chuch. The sermons are posted online too. If you're interested it's www.iccpaix.com.
Went and had ?chawarma? I love France! But seriously, they put french fries on everything.

totally just chilled out. kind of worried about the whole money thing though. made myself a little diner wich turned out quite well if I do say so myself
so cold here. come on South of France! Do your thing! Very much missing NerdFest

Fri. January 29th

Finally met Amira. She's very sweet. She set me up with the SCEFEE office so I could complete the written exam. Not nearly as daunting as is sounds. I have a class schedule now too. No classes Monday or Friday!

Wednesday, Janurary 27th

I helped Shelley check out at 7am this morning. Really sad to see her go, but Adam is waiting impatienly for her.
My sense of direction today has been much better. I found both the university building and the International office. I know, sweet, huh? I was very nervous for the oral and written exam, but it wasn't as painful as I though it would be. This spoken part went pretty well. Definately had to ask her to repeat a few things but c'est la vie. I was about to take the written when she asked for my student ID card. I don't have one. That was the mass of confusing paperwork yesterday that is still unfinished. She didn't understand that I couldn't just go buy one like the rest of the students. So she didn't let me take the test. No test means no placement, which means to class schedule, which means no classes. So, yeah. And I'm trying to work out the 200 euro fee. Why on earth do I need French social security? I already have 2 different type of international insurance! Anyway, hopefully Sue e-mails me back soon. If all else fails, I'll just pay the fee. Unfortunately I have to go to the post office to do it which is in the middle of town. I really miss Bubblewrap.

Charlie and I headed to Centre Ville today and had crepes. They serve hot-dog crepes here. No joke. All the French students I've talked to love them. Yep, this is where I live. While waiting for the crepes, we ran into Shelley's professor here in Aix.
Charlie is staying with Bill for the next week, so I headed home alone for the first time. I am so proud of myself, I didn't even get lost!

I'm supposed to go shopping with Charlotte tomorrow, but I don't know with all this crazy paperwork. Ug. Completely rediculous.

I haven't met my neighbors yet, but I do know that one is learning to play the accordian.

Nap time. Then continue with the to-do list.

What I learned:
The French have no problem with co-ed bathrooms
A stupid 3 by 4 inch pice of plastic can ruin your life
Jason's Whitworth sweater is the best thing in the world
Avacados by my window make me happy (especially when they explode and drown all the fishy ghosts)

Day 5

Good start, bad middle, good end

Shelley and I headed out to the market in the morning. It's a fresh produce market that sells wonderful herbs and spices along with fruits and veggies. I bought some Herbs de Provence. Looking froward to trying them on pasta. I also had the "Ed" experience. It's kind of like a mini Winco for all you Spokane peoples. And a little more sketch. Anyway, got some foods and hauled by bag of groceries all the way back to the dorm and up the 64 steps to my room. I was able to find the same peach syrop that my host family in Nice had. :)

The afternoon was not so wonderful. Here's a rundown:
got lost
got lost
didn't have paperwork
got paperwork
did have paperwork
found out about 200 euro fee
did paperwork
still need paperwork
If I go into any more detail here I will either cry or break something so lets leave it al that

The evening was Shelley's goodbye party at Mike's appartment
We only made it about a third of the way through the crepe batter because the gas tank ran out, but it was a great night anyway.

Something I forget from yesterday: Ashley lives on the first flood of my dorm and goes to ICCP. She's from Circle, right next to Jason's grandparents. Her last name is Mothershead. Life is crazy.

What I learned:
Potatoes are heavy
It's going to be a long week, or two, or three.....

More advise (this one is going on my wall)
"Be patient with yourself" --Geoffrey

Day 4

Spent another night at Shelley's. I'm growing fond of the slumber parties. We got up and went through some paperwork and a scary desk worker to get my key.
The ladies who work at the International Office are amazing and wonderful, beautiful people. I'm going to avoid all other offices and their intimidating staff and just go straight to the international office from now on.

So I finally got my dorm assignment and key. And I'm in the recently renovated dorm! It's soo great! I have my own mini bathroom--feet in the shower when you sit of the toilet. The toilett has a seat AND a lid! It's like paradise. The rooms were redone in the last year, so everything is new and done in a modern/sixties inspired look. The hot pink balnket from Jason goes perfeclt with the crome accents and neon green chair. There will be pics posted.
I'm on the top (5th) floor. Unfortunately I'm on the south side of the building so my view is a tree instead of the city of Aix and the sunset. Oh well. I'm just so happy to be in the new dorm. It has an actual kitches with a few tables and an oven. Life is good.

I finally got a few hours of actual, deep sleep. A nap hasn't felt that good in a long time. Not quite moved in yet. But it feels good to have my room.

Tonight we went to Life Group, a bible study put on be the Church (which is called ICCP-International Christian Community of Provence). It's at Bill's house. They have 3 adorable children. They are originally from Chicago, but have lived in Aix since May. The kids are surpassing them in French :) They made Biscuts and Gravy for us all (about 10 college students) and a chocolate tart for dessert. We went through Luke 6 and had a sending off for Shelley.

Tomorrow's plans are market, grocery store, drain-o for the shower and goodbye party for Shelley.
Charlie bought a pink bike. He is very happy.
Language test is Monday, tour of Aix is on Thursday and classes start the following Monday.

Things I learned:
The office of tourism is your friend--it knows all.
US showers are heavenly
Potatoes hanging in the doorway can be dangerous

Shelley yelling at Charlie:
"YOU said make a child"
"See, this is what I live with. Day in and day out. YOU."

Shelley's advice for living in France:
"If it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, you're probably doing it right"

Day 3

First real day in France. We made omelets in the morning. Charlie is master of the kitchen.. I think there were three cloves of garlic between our two omelets. In the afternoon, Charlie, Shelley and I went to visit Judy, a lady Shelley met through the school. She just turned 60, but really dosen't look it or act it. She's been all over the world and knows everything basically. We had tea and popcorn and chatted in the kitchen for a few hours.

At five we went to church. Awesome place. It's pretty tiny, but the people are wonderful and the message was sound. I got introduced to a ton of people and we all went out for kabobs afterwords at Le Pacha--you pick put a kabob of meat and they cook it and put it in a pita with french fries and sauce and lettuce and tomato. Quite filling and only 4 euros.

I don't really remember anyone name, I started falling asleep at the table. I did find out why Chrlie looked familiar, though. He was in the band Courderoy Shots with Josh Kuhn. Yah, craziness.

Day 2

(sorry about the delay--just got actual internet this morning)

Day 2
tired of lines. tired of people checking the camera for plastic explosives. tired of going to gate go gate, getting different instructions each time. tired.

Met an awesome Russian named Paul. I shared my gummy bears with him and we hung out while waiting for the plane. Then I had 2 free seats next to me so Paul joined me for the 11 hour flight. we took off the headphones and did commentary to the latest Harry Potter. I dare say it rivaled Wizard People. He's a doom metal guitarist (I seem to have a knack for finding those) who signed with Candelight Records here in the US with his band Forest Stream. He was in San Fran to graduate from his on-line computer animation school. made the flight go buy soo much faster.

I sat across from 2 flight attendants who were very entertaining. one of them has a son in Paris who is a model--just walked the Mylan runway for the new line of the designer who was the head of men's Prada. So now it's six hours in the frankfort airport. then hopefully getting to the school. internet is $12.00 an hour here. I just want to check my e-mail then go to sleep.
---------
So, Americans have some sort of ability to sense other Americans. Six of us found each other in the Frankfort airport. They are all part of a different program goning to Aix University. You know, the kind that actually care about you. I sat next to Tony, a kid from New York who works with a theatre there. Good times on the plane ride. An 90 minute flight was a piece of cake. For the in-flight snack we had whole grain mini sandwitches with a cream cheese-like spread and onions. Really interesting. And coffee. Mmmmmm.

No one was there to meet me at the airport. Of course. The others all had host families waiting for them. The kids were holding signs with the student's names on them. Soooo cute. Tony's family had to meet him somewhere else because out flight was a little delayed. He asked the two program coordinators who were there if they could help me. He was even willing to ask his own host family if I could stay with them (which dosen't work so well in French culture). The coordinators are wonderful people. They totally went into maternal mode. I said I could just take the train and then a taxi (what Amira suggested) and hope that someone was actually going to be there (like they said). They wouldn't hear it. They didn't want me taking the risk of getting stuck out there and said that a taxi would completely rip me off. After making calls and everything, they decided just to put all my stuff in their car and drive me to the University.

When we got there, no one was there. Of course. Niether lady could find anyone that was able to help. So, when all else fails, go to a bar! They took me to Wohoo Cafe, a sweet little bar in Aix owned by amazing people. The guy stored my luggage in the back and let me use the internet and his phone to contact parents and Shelley. And gave me a free Smirinoff Ice with a glow stick in it. Best place ever. Seriously. Shelley came and we walked to the university with all my luggage. We met her brother (well, like Kurtis brother) half way. Charlie rocks. And not only because he hauled my red 50 pound bag up four flights of stairs. Shelley showed me around the dorm and we hung out awhile. Not exactly sure what else we did. Kind of out of it.

Things I learned:
Dorm toilets have no seats. Perch with caution.
Make your first purchase in Aix toilet paper. There's none of that in the bathroom either.
The showers only stay on for 10 seconds at a time.
The best grocery store is called "Ed" but there is discrepancy on campus. Some say it's pronounced "ed" some say "eday". Pick your side.
The front door of the dorm is locked. But if you just pull it hard enough, it opens.

Day 1: Thursday, January 21st

My suitcase is exactl 50.00 pounds. The iron is now in my carry-on, but totally worth it. The Lady at security checking tickets asked how old I was. They only do that if tey think you are under 16 and therefore need to show ID.

The plane from Spokane to San Fransisco was tiny. Thankfully I sat next to a Canadian who owns a cajun restaurant in New Orleans, and not next to the idiot. The kid was 4 rows ahead of me, probably about my age, and I could hear him loud and clear the entire flight (3 hours long because of delays). He never shut up. He graciously informed the entire first half of the plane about getting drunk, doing extacy with 13 year olds, cutting down trees in 25 below and in general being such an awesome bad ass dude. Yah. Wow.

Anyway, I much prefered my Cajun cooking Canadian. We talked the entire way about family, kids, twins, New Orleans, food and travel. And we made fun of sky mall and the $200 stool/chair.
Here are the highlights of the food conversation:
--coconut brownies: pour in half the batter, cook for 5 min, put in chilled coconut ball (shredded coconut, condenced milk, butter, powdered sugar) add rest of the mix.
--put sugar in steak seasoning to make a crispy sear--always let steak thaw out to room temperature, self tenderizing-
--roll out self-rising dough very thin, roll in ham and cheese, let rise
So, generally awsone flight, even though it was longer than expected.

We got in late and I ran with a guy going to Austria to get to our next flight. We got to the gate, which is on the very very tip of the international gate, about 3/4 the way across SFO, and the gate agent pointed at the plane making its way down the runway. So, after attempting the auto-rebook machine and visiting united counters, I found myself in the customer service line for over an hour. There two poor agents were tying to rebook everyone who was delayed because of weather, which was 5 flights full of people when I got in line. Many many more came after me. Should have brought my cell phone.
What I learned:
People are a lot nicer because I look 13
Also, be nice to people, and even those who are really stressed will be nice to you and it makes their day better.

While waiting under the awning for the airport shuttle I met a family of 4 who had gotten delayed as well. The little girl smiled at me and told me that she was 4 and her name was Lucy and introduced me to her stuffed black bear, Ginger. Her 7 year old brother, Jack, wasn't quite as interested in me. From there I started talking with her parents and found out that they live on Saunders Street in Helena! The wife's name was Shannon McDonald I think. So I left Spokane, flew to San Fransisco and found a family from Helena! So now I'm in the Comfort Inn, which is quite nice, and getting some needed sleep. My plane leaves at 12:30 pm tomorrow and I'll arrive in Marsaille at 6:15pm on Saturday.
What I learned:
Airport shuttle is really hard to find in SFO.
San Fransisco is more fun with Kyrstin
People are generally pretty cool, especially Montanans.
Stuffed bears are very important, but you don't bring them to the beach. They don't like all the sand.
